What is an Architect?

The word architect is derived from the Greek word 'arkhi-tekton' - 'arkhi' meaning 'head' and 'tekton' meaning 'builder'. As the name implies, he is the head or master-builder, the leader of the team which constitutes the building industry.

An architect is a design professional who uses his creativity and working knowledge of structures and materials to provide living, working and recreational environments. To design these environments, an architect combines the practical considerations of the site, the clients' needs and costs with a creative understanding of materials, aesthetics, and the cultural and physical contexts. Architects are not just concerned with buildings but with improving the built environment as a whole; they have to balance the private needs of their clients with the interest of the community at large.

The practice of architecture (including the offering of Architectural Design and Services) in Singapore is strictly governed by The Architect’s Act, an act of parliamentary statutes.

SIA recommends a HOLISTIC APPROACH

Engaging an Architect for authority submissions only is not efficient; who is doing the Design, the Documentation, Contract Administration?

Design, Documentation, Contract Administration and Authority Submission is best done by one party – the ARCHITECT.  This ensures maximum efficiency, value for money for YOU.

  • Engage an Architect for full scope of service to fully benefit from the Architect’s skills and training
  • Choose your own Architect; don’t leave the choice to someone else
  • Architect as lead consultant provides a one-stop service to the client

Check that the architect is registered with the Board of Architects Singapore (http://www.boa.gov.sg/) and is a member of the Singapore Institute of Architects (http://www.sia.org.sg/member-firm-listing.html).

It is important to note that the practice of architecture (including the offering of Architectural Design and Services) in Singapore is strictly governed by The Architect’s Act, an act of parliamentary statutes.

Choose an architect with experience of your type of property and one that suits your style of project.
