The jury confers a design award for the ITE Headquarters and College Central campus at Ang Mo Kio which exemplifies the sensibilities and qualities of a world-class educational institution. Its key design focus of creating an inspiring learning environment and promoting environmental-consciousness is commendable and well executed throughout the development.
The design provides numerous platforms for interaction and exchange between students, staff and the public all across the campus. This is accomplished by its wide array of break-out spaces, sky bridges, the activity hubs as well as lush greenery, all designed as an integral part of the built-environment.
The use of the Central Green Spine and Inspiration zone, defined by a series of covered social settings, themed gardens with inter-woven water features and Green Walls, was a powerful architectural element. It not just orientates and binds together the different school blocks; the primary North-South axial space channels the prevailing wind through the covered space to create a comfortable and conducive environment for activities.
Its series of linked V-shaped blocks clearly defines the 4 different disciplines of the institution. The outward expression of the campus is highly visible from the surrounding, becoming a key landmark of the locale. Its characteristic aluminium façade of the Convention Centre with its boulder-like building form, and its interweaving ribbon of environmental canopies, describe relevant narratives of education of importance: robust founding in education, and education as a continuous and lifelong learning process. These are quintessential for instilling pride and ownership in the students to develop a truly sustainable identity for the school.
